Last week we heard two great talks at church – so great, in fact, that Chris and I were both determined to make changes in our family scripture study and prayer. We do these two things but noticed they were becoming more habit than intentional.
So, we decided rather than having Chris or I read scriptures each night, we would take turns, breaking up the chapters in sections to discuss them. It’s really made a difference. Last night Emma was out late for a Girl Scout activity so she missed scripture study. The first thing she asked Chris when she got in the car was, “Did you already read scriptures?” When he said we had, she groaned. As soon as they got home, she asked me to read the section we read earlier so she wouldn’t be behind.
We’ve also discussed with the kids how when we pray we need to say something about each of us. At times, it’s been funny as the kids try to think of something different for each of us each night. One night Hannah asked Heavenly Father to help Daddy be handsome. Another night Caleb asked that all the others at the next book club liked the book as much as Mommy did. It’s been eye-opening to see what the kids pick up from our day-to-day life. They watch so closely.
On a side note – I DID love the book for this month’s book club – “Austenland” by Shannon Hale.

If you are a Jane Austen fan, it’s a really fun read.
I love your scripture study and prayer idea. I have noticed with our kids that they tend to “rush” through the prayer, saying the same thing every time. I’ll have to start the mentioning each person in prayer also. Thanks for the great idea!!!! LOVE YOU.
That’s great about the scripture study and prayers. We are just grateful when all the kids want to participate and read for 5 minutes! Prayers in our house definitely need some work! I keep bringing out those FHE lessons on prayer, but so far to no avail!
I read this book. It was pretty good!
There’s nothing better than listening to kids pray. So fun! And so sweet! I also read this book and loved it! Very fun book.
Oooh, thanx for the tips on scripture and prayer. Love your cute family stories about prayer. I just love children’s prayers.
That is so neat that Emma really wanted to read the scriptures. What a sweet girl. Love the prayers too. We get random things like that every so often as well. We have been changed things around here as far as scripture study and family prayer and the kids are loving it. So nice.
I’ll have to read this book, since I am officially in “Austenland” right now!
You guys are amazing parents. It is good to read these sort of entries it urges me to do better!
