Today was our big race that the kids and I had registered for. There were some nerves, but there was also a great deal of excitement. I have wanted to do a 5K for awhile now but didn’t want to do it by myself so my friend, Lisa, jumped up and volunteered herself and her kids.
Since the race was on Halloween Day, we thought it would be fun to have the kids make shirts. We met earlier in the week and had a great time making these simple shirts.
The kids’ one-mile Fun Run was first and our kids were still in a pack after the first turn:
Then they started to spread out a little bit.
{We asked if the mile was accurate as all the kids had really quick times – they told us it was, but we’re still skeptical.}
Hannah sped into the finish in a ‘blur’ (third place!):

Cami was upset she wasn’t registered to run – after all, she had made a shirt too for ‘race day.’ So, I jogged around the course with her. She was thrilled to finish just like everyone else.
Then it was time for the 5K. Just lining up for the start of the race was a little overwhelming:
I felt pretty good about keeping my pace throughout of about a 9 minute mile. I did have a little bit more left at the end than I thought I would and looked like a dork at the finish as I tried to give what was left.
Then, of course, a few minutes later Lisa crossed the line with a huge smile on her face. Next time I’ll have to remember to smile for the photo finish! I did feel a huge sense of accomplishment and actually got a little emotional – we did it!
