Our last month or so has seemed like we’ve constantly been on the go. I’ve been trying to figure out what is different, why we feel this way, and I think it’s because Chris has been so busy at work. He normally works late hours and has his regular monthly business trips to Europe but his weekends have also been busy so we feel like we’ve seen a lot less of him. The missionaries have been so patient with us as they try to schedule an evening to come over – there are just very few.
SO, the one thing that we keep trying to find a place for is Family Home Evening (FHE). We always have had FHE on Sunday nights because of Chris’s work schedule. If there was a meeting on Sunday night, we’d just have FHE a little earlier. Now we have church in the afternoons and Chris often has leadership meetings in the evenings and first thing in the morning; my meetings are usually in the midmorning. So, our Sundays are often filled. What happened to the day of rest?! We have found that Chris can often make it home a little earlier on Monday nights for FHE if we weren’t able to have it on Sunday. But, this last week Chris got stuck at work and couldn’t leave. It was up to me to brave FHE by myself.
We all have assignments for FHE but really, it comes down to the 15 minutes beforehand for all of us to get anything ready. I’m so glad we have a lot of FHE packets from when we were at Cornell! Our lesson went well and we played “Don’t Eat Pete!” with Cami even getting into the spirit of the game. We came to refreshment time and I had no clue, especially because it was already 8:00 p.m. and I wanted the kids to sleep. I pulled out Cafe Cookies from last year’s Girl Scout cookie time – too bland, so I pulled frosting from the fridge, and an assortment of candies to decorate with. The kids weren’t going to sleep right away anyway, right?! I suggested we all make a face with a cookie. Emma was so excited that she said, “Mom, you are always so creative! You are so cool!” That right there was worth braving FHE by myself!
