Our homeschooling field trips definitely stopped abruptly as soon as Emma and Hannah started school. But, as I did my planning last month and realized we’d be talking about the Great Fire of London during our history study one week, I made it a priority to make use of the great city we live in! I had been wanting to get to The Monument for a long time, and this was a perfect time!

The Monument
One of our good friends, Paulina (9 months pregnant), wanted to go along with us to see The Monument as well. It was fun to have her with us.

Kids & Paulina
The Monument is a beautiful stone column that was completed in 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London.

The architects put a lot of symbolism in it as well. One example is that it is 61 metres high (202 feet) – the exact distance between it and the site in Pudding Lane (a bakery) where the fire began.

At the Monument
Paulina stayed down so as not to induce labor, but the rest of us climbed the 311 spiral steps all the way to the top of The Monument.

Cami Peeks Over the Rail
When we got to the top, we were rewarded with a 360 degree view of the city.

At the Top
It was neat to point out a lot of the landmarks that can be viewed from the top.

View from the Top
When we were finished enjoying the view, we climbed all the way back down the 311 steps.

As we exited, we were each given a certificate for completing the climb!

Certified Stair Climbers
Since we were already that far into the city, we met up with Chris for lunch. He was really excited about meeting up and only gave us the post code of where to meet, not the location name. As we got close, we smelled a delicious BBQ smell and were hopeful that was where we were headed. Sure enough, it was! We had a delicious and filling lunch with BBQ ribs and root beer – true delicacies!

BBQ Lunch with Chris
On our way back to the tube station to head home, Chris took us by his favorite little bookstore next to his office. There truly isn’t anything like an old English bookstore!

Books Wrapped for Delivery
It was a perfect day out! We just may have to do field trips more often!
