Last night we took Emma to The Lion King as we had given her tickets for her birthday. We were so grateful for some friends who watched the other three kids so we could have this experience with her.
We took advantage of the opportunity and did a ‘dinner and a show’. We ate in a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant on a side street off of Times Square. Anyone who has eaten in NYC knows the best food can be found in these hole-in-the-wall places. Emma enjoyed her meal, especially the chips and salsa. This is a staple during her lunches every day as well. I have no idea how it started but she’s one for routines so this has become part of her daily lunch routine.
The show was amazing, especially the costumes. I loved the African songs done in the native tongue. The introduction song had me crying (I know, big surprise there!) with the power of it and then the people in their amazing animal costumes. Just add that on to watching Emma’s face and eyes as she stared in fascination at her first Broadway musical – it’s no wonder I couldn’t keep from crying. Needless to say, Emma was riveted to the front of her seat for the entire performance.
The worst part of the evening was when we went to pick up our car from the parking garage. We chose a parking garage that wasn’t on the main Broadway strip so we could make a quick exit as it wasn’t very busy. We may think twice about doing that again – if they aren’t busy, they are very lax about doing things the right way. We gave them our ticket stub for our car and they couldn’t find our keys! We stood there for about 10 minutes while they searched everywhere. One of the attendants finally let out a whoop that he had found them under something else on a table. They obviously didn’t get their tip!
But, all in all it was a great night!
What a fun night!! The Lion King sounds like it is really awesome! I have so many things on my list to do and see in the city before we leave this area (if we ever do).
That is so crazy about the parking garage!! I always worry about those places. But I don’t think you can go to NYC without having at least one incidence with parking. We had our car towed and ticketed when we went to Les Mis. That was a nightmare!! But the good news is that Ben found a place online that will contest your ticket and tow, and they got all the money back for us!
Wow! Sounds like you had lots of fun! What a great birthday surprise! Glad everything turned out OK with your car!
How fun that you could do that together. Emma will remember this forever!
These are the types of experiences you always want to remember! Not very often that both Mom and Dad get to go on a date with just one child. I am glad they found your keys too!
(sorry if this comes up twice…it didn’t seem to take the first time)
