We’re not entirely sure how time flew so fast that we have a 16 year old! In England, Emma is now considered an adult in many ways, although she still can’t get a driving license here until she’s 17.
Emma is definitely one that has her head on straight. She is always researching a new interest or something for her future. She has a plan set out for her life – college major, colleges applying to in 2 years, courses to take at certain times in her high school career, where she wants to live as an adult, names of her future children, etc. She has definite likes and dislikes . . . and overall, just knows who she is and what makes her tick.

Emma
This year she has ventured into learning to play the guitar, serves as a student ambassador at the high school, and has overcome some challenging personal issues. We are proud of who she is becoming and know Emma will go far.
For Emma’s birthday, she chose to fly out to spend time with Grandma and Grandpa Stephenson in California. It was her first overseas flight unaccompanied and it wasn’t a big deal to her (although it was to me). Her big goal? Getting her California driver’s permit!
Emma lucked out during her visit to be there while Aunt Heidi and the Benson kids were visiting from Mongolia. Aunt Heidi was on bed rest for her pregnancy so Emma became an instant playmate for the kids.

As luck would have it, Aunt Heather and Uncle Jed delivered their new little girl, Kara, during that time as well. Emma got to visit them in the hospital and became our family representative for all these exciting family events.

To add on to the bigger events, there were cousin sleepovers, ward trunk-or-treats, dances, movie nights, and American restaurants. Emma had an amazing time . . . and succeeded in getting her driver’s permit AND went out for a driving lesson with an instructor. Next step . . . passing her driving license tests before her year mark is up.
Emma flew home the day before her birthday. We decided to celebrate her arrival home by having her birthday dinner and cake that night for a big ‘welcome home / happy birthday’ celebration.

Celebrating after Long Travel Day
We were glad that we did celebrate early, as the next day Emma was sick and had to stay home from school. There is nothing like being sick to your stomach on your birthday . . . let alone your 16th! At least it will always be memorable!

Decorated Room
When Emma was better and had gone back to school, her young women leader came over and decorated her room. Emma was definitely surprised when she got home! It was a memorable birthday on many levels!
