We decided to make the kids’ schooling a little more difficult this year. Or maybe not more difficult, but ‘different’. Each week Emma and Caleb are required to turn in a report on a subject they have been given to research for the week. The subjects range anywhere from science, history, art, or book reports. These were big battles in the beginning, but now the kids are getting to be pros on researching and writing a simple five paragraph report.
A couple weeks ago, Chris decided to mix things up a bit and assigned the kids each a topic from California history, since that is where he grew up. Emma was assigned California Missions, while Caleb was assigned John Sutter. They each spent a week researching and then writing their report. The following week they were assigned to make a model from what they had researched. Emma was so excited to do this and Caleb was . . . not.
Emma spent so much time with her model, building mountains and painting. Caleb put his together the day before it was due. It shows a lot about their personalities and interests. But, they both did well and got good grades for their efforts.

Great projects! I love doing those kinds of things…or at least I did. 🙂
Those are so cool! Good job Emma and Caleb. I can’t wait till my kids are doing that sort of thing cause I loved doing those in school.
I think it’s a great idea to have your kids write reports. I’m tucking that idea away for future years. 😉 From what I’ve heard, the writing of students today has declined greatly and so getting a lot more practice is a wonderful thing.
