Pinewood Derby – Finish Line

As an update to our previous post – The Race is officially over and Caleb placed a respectable 10th place among 35 of the toughest race-hardened Cub Scouts in the Clifton/Passaic area. As consolation to the horrendous upset, he is looking forward to the coming years to hone his racing skills and create the perfect car.

As we already described, Caleb probably had as much fun building the car as he did racing it, although both were very thrilling. As we put the finishing touches on the car this week we made a trip to the local U.S. Post Office for an official weigh-in on a calibrated scale. The car had to be 5.0 ounces or less and on our first go around we came in at 5.3 ounces. We have been using our small kitchen scale as a guide, which was obviously not accurate. Luckily, we had built the car with removable weights and returned to the Post Office for another weigh-in. With much congratulations and well-wishes from our wonderful postmaster Caleb was officially off to the races with a weight of 4.9 ounces.

Three trophies lined the table last night at the derby, looming large for all the scouts to salivate over. Caleb’s first race was successful with a win, which put a beaming smile on his face as he strode over to claim his trophy. He was disappointed when I explained that he had to win multiple times to claim the prize, but elated still the same with his win. He went on to win a few more times, only to fall in the last heat. He was very happy with the outcome, and more importantly, he and I had a great time together.

P.S. – In one of the pictures above you will see me in my Scout leader uniform. Believe it or not, this is my original Scout shirt I first wore as a Boy Scout.
