I titled this post “Part 1” because I hope to provide a second update in a few weeks of the soon-to-be-winner “Lightning Bolt” in the local Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. At least that is what Caleb tells me, because lightning bolts are really fast. I have been trying to explain that it is an activity and all that matters is that we have fun. Still, as many of you know, it is hard to keep that mindset while you are trying to craft the next world-record holder.

Having started over four weeks in advance of the race, one would have thought Caleb was anxious to build his car. We have worked well together and he has done a great job. The only thing that worries me is all the talk I hear among the fathers at pack nights. I knew that this was an important time of the year, but I had not expected the level of competitiveness that all the other fathers have shown. Well, at least Caleb and I have had a great time together. Stay tuned for “Part 2 – the Finish Line.”
