Chris’s office helped us find a great flat with 3 bedrooms to use for a month while we look for a more permanent rental. We are slowly getting used to ‘city life.’ Our flat looks over a busy strip where we hear the traffic, sirens, and buses come and go at all hours. Perhaps this is a good thing, because in addition to the concrete walls and floors, our neighbors hopefully can’t hear how loud we are.
With all the roominess of the flat, our kitchen seems to be the place to be. Really, it took us a number of visits into the kitchen to find which cabinets lead to which appliances – see if you can spot the refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine/dryer.
The hardest part for me right now is not having a car. There is just something in the freedom of coming and going from Point A to Point B when you want. The walk to the tube this morning on our way to church in below freezing temperatures was chilly. Then stepping into the tunnel heading down to the tube, made my teeth freeze – yes, my teeth!
However, the more I get comfortable with how to get here and there on the tube, I am grateful that I don’t have to learn driving directions everywhere, as well as trying to remind myself which side of the road I’m supposed to be on.
This week’s upcoming challenge – take the kids site-seeing to a few museums by myself . . using the tube. This is more than I can say about our time in NYC, so that must be saying something. I’m not sure what, but something.
