New York City Day Trip

Today we drove into New York City (20-30 minutes) and very wisely got an early start. When we drove back home mid-afternoon the New Jersey line to enter the Lincoln Tunnel was backed up to Seacaucus – at least an hour wait.

Although I spend nearly every day in Manhattan, we don’t visit much as a family. In fact, I can’t imagine anyone with four small kids spending much time in the city – for obvious reasons. It probably didn’t help that this is a holiday week and people from all over the world are in town. In fact, we found it difficult to even walk on the sidewalk – let alone push a stroller and tow three other kids. Needless to say, we didn’t lose anyone and made it home with some patience and sanity still remaining.

We started at the Rockefeller Center and just missed the Today’s Show being filmed outside. We did get to see the Christmas tree and skating rink, but the wind made it so cold that the kids were more interested in getting inside than watching.

The highlight of the day for me was the “Top of the Rock,” or the observation deck of the Rockefeller Center on the 70th floor. It is shorter than the Empire State Building, but I think it gives a better view. I especially enjoyed the elevator car with a glass top that made the shaft visible during the ride straight to the top.

Among other things, we visited the American Girl Place, had lunch, and rode in some cabs, but the kids would probably agree that the highlight for them was FAO Schwartz. They had some Christmas money that was burning a hole in their pocket the last couple of days and were glad to spend time roaming the store. In fact, Becca and I enjoyed it as well. The whole day was an awesome experience.
