In celebration of our recent 10th anniversary, Becca and I arrived this morning in Ireland to magnificent weather and a beautiful countryside. We know, because we spent much of the day driving from Dublin to Waterford, a small town on the southern shore, famous for the crystal by the same name. I should mention that the driving took some getting used to – something I was particularly concerned about. Not only do we drive on the left hand side of the road, but learning to do so with a standard transmission took a little practice. One day down with no accidents – but I am not so concerned with my driving as I am with the other crazy Americans, one of whom almost ran into us today. Becca calls the car cute, I say it’s just small. We are staying in Waterford at a great Bed & Breakfast near many of the downtown historical sites. Waterford has a long and important history in Ireland as its first prominent town and a viking base for piracy.

On the way to Waterford we stopped at a few other places, but really enjoyed our time in Kilkenny, an early capital of Ireland during the middle ages. The castle was magnificent, beautiful and large. We are amazed at the history in many of the sites, much of which dates back to before the United States.

It’s been a good first day, with more still to come.
