Insight from a Child

Almost 7 1/2 years ago, Chris’s sister, Cami passed away. We keep a picture of her on our bedside table so we (especially the kids) can be reminded of her and the incredible person she was. Our Cami (who is named after Chris’s sister), in particular, likes to carry the picture around with her, which explains why the frame is missing the stand on the back.

This morning Hannah was asking me about the picture. I explained that it is the picture Cami had taken before she left on her mission for the church to San Diego. To this Hannah replied, “She is very pretty.” Then, after a minute, “I am not going on a mission. I don’t want to die.” So I told her Cami didn’t die while she was on her mission, she came home and was sick for quite awhile before she passed away. Then we talked about how Uncle Jed is on his mission right now and is fine. That Chris, Aunt Heidi, Uncle Joseph, and Uncle Donovan all served missions and they are fine. We talked a little bit about why Cami was sick, her heart & lung transplant, and her body rejecting her new organs after awhile. It was a good conversation with Hannah being very intent on understanding.

Our conversation over, I went in the bathroom to finish getting ready for the day when I heard Hannah telling Cami about Aunt Cami. Then I heard her say something that brought tears to my eyes. She said, “Uncle Jed is on his mission and he is fine. Aunt Cami was just ready to go be with Heavenly Father.” Indeed she was!

What a sweet story. I love how Hannah interpreted it, perfectly!
