One of the bigger British holidays is Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night on 5 November. This is the anniversary of the prevention of a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605. Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators, was arrested, tortured and executed for his part in the plot. So, today many people light bonfires and watch amazing fireworks displays to commemorate the occasion.
This was the first year that we took part in any of the festivities. Some friends invited us to a local fireworks display and for treats afterward. We bundled up and grabbed our blanket to enjoy the display.

When we arrived at the park, we noticed no one else had brought a blanket. Of course, I’m thinking everyone brings blankets to watch 4th of July fireworks, so surely it’s the same here. No, everyone stood for an hour waiting and watching the display in the middle of the field. Perhaps it’s usually wet in November here and no one wants to sit on the ground. Sadly, our kids tried to sit on the blanket but couldn’t see the fireworks because everyone’s heads were in the way. We’ll know for next time.
While we waited for the fireworks display to begin, our friends had brought a lantern to light and let go in the park. The wind made it difficult to light and even harder for the hot air to fill it up.

But, it finally took flight . . . into some nearby trees.

The fun quickly turned to worry until one of the men was able to shake it down from the tree before any leaves caught fire. We were so thankful nothing more came of it!
Finally the fireworks display started and it was amazing. It was almost 30 minutes of a 4th of July fireworks finale all set to music.

The air was completely smoky when it was through, but no one seemed to mind. It truly was a fun treat!

What a fun event! I think those giant lanterns are so cool! Would love to try that sometime.
