I guess I should say first that I love having Family Home Evening as a family – isn’t that why it’s called FAMILY Home Evening?! But, sometimes it just doesn’t work that way. Because of Chris’s work schedule we usually just have it on Sunday night rather than Monday night. There are times that Chris has church meetings on Sunday nights so we trade for a Monday night.
Tonight at dinner we announced that we’d be having Family Home Evening tomorrow night because Chris had a meeting. There were groans all around. (Maybe in a few years these will be cheers – so we should be grateful for the groans!) They all out-voted me and we had Family Home Evening sans Dad. I wasn’t really planning on this so nothing was planned.
Cami was in charge of the lesson . . . . hmm. Well, Hannah opened up Family Home Evening and after the opening song and prayer, I asked Cami what her lesson was about. Great mother moment as I expected my 2 year old to be more prepared than I was . . . . and she was on top of it! She immediately said, “Jesus Christ.” I asked her if she could find a picture of Jesus anywhere in the room. She found this one by Minerva Teichert:

We talked about how we are like the sheep and Jesus wants us to help him be a shepherd to find those we’ve missed at church lately. Perhaps this was a very appropriate lesson for us tonight.
Then we turned the time over to Caleb for the activity. You can tell this boy has been spending a lot of time at the gym this summer. He had us doing sets of push-ups, sit-ups, forward rolls, back bends, v-ups, straddle rolls, etc. I had to quit after awhile. It looks so easy sometimes but my 31-year old body doesn’t work that way anymore!
It was a great night and a great Family Home Evening. It just reminded me that some of the greatest teaching moments are those that aren’t planned but are spent having quality time with your kids. Maybe my kids will remember how their mom tried to do their strenuous activities during Family Home Evening, even though she woke up sore the next morning!
