Emma had a different birthday this year, with Chris being away. I think this may have been the first time he’s ever missed one of the kids’ birthdays. With his work schedule being demanding and out of England, Chris was already going to be away during that time, but then Hurricane Sandy arrived on the scene and wreaked even more havoc. We were thankful that he never lost power, as we tried to celebrate as much as we could with him over Skype or FaceTime.

FaceTiming Gifts
We celebrated over a period of 4 days. On Saturday we tried to see a family movie (Hotel Transylvania), but when we got there it was sold out. Instead we opted for dinner at Byron’s Burger with real American root beer. On Sunday we let Emma open her gifts.

Gifts
On Monday, her real birthday, Emma started back to school after half-term and we had pizza and cake to celebrate that night. Emma decided she really wanted a Baskin Robbins ice cream cake, like Chris did. So, she was excited to have one with her name on it . . . I would think most children would want a home-made cake, but not mine.

The Cake
Of course, we Skyped for the blowing out of the candles (while Chris was on a conference call).

Singing ‘Happy Birthday’
When Chris’s conference call was done, there was a lot to talk about. I’m sure he was sad to watch us all enjoy the cake without him.

Gabbing Post Conference Call
Tuesday was the movie do-over day. Emma had invited a friend to come to mutual with her so we picked them up from school and took everyone to the movie. After the movie, they went to mutual for a Halloween Party. The youth surprised Emma with a birthday cake and singing her ‘Happy Birthday’. It was a pretty good birthday do-over celebration.
A lot of changes have happened for this girl this year, but she is resilient and does what she needs to do. Aside from that, she always makes the best of it and never tires of being happy! We are so grateful for Emma and her example to all of us!
