Salzburg (Tuesday/Wednesday):
We flew into Austria early Tuesday morning and the view from the airplane window while we were landing was amazing! It was so lush and green! This was just the beginning of our love affair with that country!
The feeling I got after we landed was one of relaxation. Austria wasn’t like Italy (or any of the other countries we visited) with the hustle and bustle like NYC. The atmosphere is very laid back with fewer people, which for some odd reason causes people to be friendlier and more helpful. Such a great feeling!
We toured Mozart’s home and learned more about his life, which was a great preface for our planned evening later. We did a lot of window shopping as the little shops along the streets are so cute. It was almost all we could do to not get a native dress ourselves! They are so beautiful!

For dinner we attended a Mozart dinner concert, which was held in a place called Stiftskeller St. Peter. It has been a restaurant since 803 (no, I didn’t forget the ‘1’ – not 1803, but 803!). We were served a 3 course meal that was broken up with performances by a ‘Mozart group’ dressed in period costumes, playing period instruments (strings and a piano forte). There were also two individuals who sang for the opera portions. I still don’t consider myself an opera person but they did a good job. We weren’t allowed to take pictures during the performances but I loved the costumes!

Wednesday we took a ‘Sound of Music’ tour. Our tour guide was a Salzburg native named Manfred. He is actually a ski instructor, a rock climbing guide, and anything that has to do with the outdoors. So, I’m sure driving around a little tour van telling about where scenes from ‘The Sound of Music’ were shot while listening to the movie’s soundtrack in the background is just the highlight of his day. I’m sure it’s just something to fill his time during the off-season of all the other jobs he has. But, he did a good job in convincing us that this was something he cared about. See if you recognize any scenes from ‘The Sound of Music’:
