Our town has been concentrating on being a “Clean Community” for the last few years. Every year they have an awards ceremony to recognize groups that have worked on cleaning the community or done something to help recycle. Emma and Hannah’s Girl Scout troops painted some of the storm drains in the town to remind people only water should go down them. Caleb’s Cub Scout den cleaned up a park. So, of course, their groups were being recognized.
Emma and Hannah were excited and eagerly dressed in their uniforms. Caleb, on the otherhand, cried and cried he didn’t want to go up in front of people. I got him to put on his uniform and I thought that was doing pretty good.
When it was time to go up to actually get the awards, Emma had no issues.

Hannah was the only one of her little troop to show up and she walked right up on stage by herself. She actually wouldn’t get off the stage until they let her have the microphone so she could say “Thank you.” Chris and I were laughing so hard – from it being funny or embarrassing, we weren’t sure.

Caleb still refused to go up on the stage, but I made him a deal – if he wanted to play my iPod while he waited, he had to agree to go up and be supportive of his den. Of course, by the time it was their turn to go up, most of the other groups were done and so their families had already left. Still, you can see, he didn’t want anywhere near the microphone and didn’t want to make eye contact with the audience.

Such diverse children we have . . .
