The night before Caleb’s birthday I came home around 10:00 p.m. from a meeting. Caleb greeted me at the door – he was too excited to sleep. He finally wound down and went to sleep only to get up early bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, excited for his big “8th” birthday.

When grandparents arrived and we’d had lunch, Caleb was ready for presents. He was excited about everything but thought it was really cool that he was given his dad’s Hardy Boys book collection from when he was little. It was so neat that Grandma and Grandpa saved those for him!

Then of course Caleb saved the one gift he knew he was getting for last. When we asked him about his birthday wish list he told us he only wanted one thing – a mushroom. We told him that was a really big birthday gift and if that was what he wanted, he’d have to pay for 1/3 of it. (Yes, we’re mean parents.) He did extra chores around the house and earned his portion. The mushroom arrived a few days before his birthday but he wasn’t allowed to open it. So, he was more than ready to open it – dressed for the occasion in his gym clothes.

Then Caleb and Chris had to test it. Chris uses it as a chin-up bar but Caleb has decided it’s a high bar. Whatever works.

Caleb’s chosen birthday meal was lasagna, French bread, and salad. Then we brought out the cake. Let’s just say candles make the cake sometimes.

It seemed like Caleb had a good day. He enjoyed his time being the center of attention for the day . . well, the weekend. More on that to come . . .
