I am amazed at how much each of our kids looks forward to their birthday, Caleb being no exception. It’s all he could talk about the last few weeks, conjecturing on what presents he might receive, planning his birthday activity on Saturday, and organizing his special birthday meal (of an Italian fare this year with pasta and bread sticks). A few people even approached us after church yesterday to regretfully decline our kind invitation to Caleb’s birthday party on Monday. They were delighted we had thought to invite them, but couldn’t make it on such short notice. We were equally surprised about the party we hadn’t planned to throw, and hope that his invitation didn’t reach too many people, although, everyone we passed in the hall wished him a happy birthday. We could have been in for a surprise tonight, but luckily nobody came looking for a party.

Because of scheduling we had to celebrate his birthday last night, but knew that he wouldn’t complain. Up until celebration time Becca had successfully hidden his presents, so Caleb was under the impression he had two birthday cards from the mail to open. He handled it like a sport and was ecstatic when he learned that we hadn’t really forgotten to buy him a gift. He had a great time with gifts, cake, and ice cream. Having already celebrated last night, he came down to breakfast this morning and asked if he was now 6. Yes – finally!
