This spring Hannah kept asking me if she could play soccer. She was so insistent, I finally found a training group that met a block away from our house, and we were completely educated on the British theory of “football”. You can’t just go join a team and play for a season. Even at a young age, you have to train in these training groups and then try out for a team. So, Hannah went through drills and more drills, followed by a short pick-up game afterward to practice their skills. And, yes, Hannah was the only girl there!

Hannah Warming Up
As soon as soccer season came around for the school, Hannah was ready. As a 5th grader, she was in the bottom of the age for the teammates that go all the way up to 8th graders. The size difference kept the coaches from playing the 5th graders, as they didn’t want them to get hurt. However, the younger girls could dress and go to the games to cheer on the older ones. Hannah was fine with that decision and went to every game, dressed, and ready to cheer. However, somehow the coach kept putting her into each game. Once she even scored! It seems playing with British boys made her more aggressive . . . and the fact that she is tall helped as well.

ACS School Soccer Team
This last Saturday, the girls had an all-day soccer festival to wrap up the season. They had a great time and Hannah is excited to play again next year!

Outside Fulham Stadium
We took Hannah’s football focus and decided it was time to really experience British football by attending a Fulham vs. West Brompton football match.

Pre-game Warmups
We had a great time, even in the classic British weather. We were a little surprised to hear more singing than cheering, but each team had their faithfuls there. Both sides were happy in the end as the match was a draw.
