Book Binding

On Friday (my second day of my two-day birthday), my friend, Jenn (who also happens to be my visiting teacher) came over to teach me how to make a book. I have been looking forward to this for over a month when we planned this activity and I ordered my supplies from this fun store. Jenn took a class on book binding at BYU and I really realized how much fun I missed out on by only taking those classes I needed to take and not any fun electives, like a dance class or . . . book binding! Maybe I could have picked up some new talents! Although, really, it was probably more fun to learn from Jenn!

Some things I learned:

– using an xacto wasn’t as tricky as I remember it being in middle school art . . . after I got the hang of it again!

– I’m still a little slow adding in my head, even after doing math with my kids every day. Jenn and I had to confer on adding fractions in our heads.

– gluing can be stressful. Is it enough? Too much? Is it already drying? Do I have the paper pressed down where it’s supposed to be? Do I still have time to reposition the paper before it adheres permanently?

– the end result looks nothing like the beginning of the process.

– every project won’t be perfect. I still remember my friend, Blue, telling me that every quilt should always be like an ‘Indian quilt’ – they always make at least one intentional mistake so as not to make it perfect and offend the gods. So, a non-perfect project is good!

– letting your kids have free-reign on the camera (not my NEW one!!) for 4 hours makes for fun viewing after going through all 100 of them!
