When considered within the scheme of everyday life, there isn’t much excitement in a broken furnace, except when you have four small children to compound the issue. The actual dysfunction of the furnace wasn’t a great problem this time, because it only made the house extremely cold. Unlike the first time, when the furnace clogged and spewed black soot throughout the house and we spent a week cleaning grime off everything.
No, this time it was just cold. Not as cold as the second time the furnace broke during the night and we awoke to near-freezing temperatures. This time it luckily happened during the day, when the repair service could make the multiple visits it took to fix “most” of the problem. It would take another visit and day to fix “all” the problem.

During the most recent resuscitation the repairman luckily picked up a new assistant – Hannah; if that is what you can call her abundance of help. If anything, she helped him pass the 1 1/2 hours with interesting stories, anecdotes, four-year old philosophy, and a detailed account of each family member, including what we ate for breakfast. I am told that Dominique (the repairman) demonstrated an aptitude for replacing a pump, while simultaneously carrying on a conversation with a small child (which really translates to being a good listener). We are convinced that without Hannah, he may have lost his sanity. As for Hannah, we can only hope for a career in furnace repair, but if not, she may be ready for storytelling.
As for the real issue at hand – it is probably time for a new furnace.
