2012 Olympic Torch Relay

The Olympics are nearly here and we were able to enjoy having the Torch Relay go through very near us.  We actually had a couple places we could choose to view it from, but we chose to go to Kew Bridge with some friends.

Seriously, could you ask for a better day in London?!  The weather was amazing – not a cloud in the sky!

We arrived in plenty of time to get a good spot where the hand-off would supposedly occur, then we just had to wait.

When the time was approaching, the street started taking on a parade atmosphere, with Olympic vehicles coming through honking their horns as well as police cars decorated for the occasion.

Bus with Torches and Runners for the Day

The hand-off happened before the torch reached us so we couldn’t view it very well with the camera truck being in the way, but that’s okay.  We were able to see the runner, but all my shots have the same policewoman’s arm in it as she continued walking in my view.

But, we were there with friends for this (probably) once-in-a-lifetime event so that was a great reason for this day out!

Afterward, we walked around the corner to the Steam Museum.  I’ve driven by it a number of times but never knew what it was; so we thought we’d take the chance and check it out.  Surprisingly, it’s all about steam (engines, etc.).  We got to ride the little steam engine train they had open especially for the Torch Relay Day (they usually only do it on Sundays).

The biggest attraction was the Steam Museum’s own ‘Splash Zone.’  On a hot day, nothing felt better to the kids!

What a fun and memorable day!
