The older two kids attend a special Homeschool “School” one day a week. It is quite a distance from where we live so I’ve been trying to come up with some fun things to do with the younger girls while we are out that way. So, this week we went on a ‘Wind in the Willows Adventure’ (found in a great book I got for Christmas), which was great fun for all of us!
We started at this beautiful church that seemed to jump right out of Jane Austen’s time.

The cemetery looked amazing!
We walked on a footpath that took us through fields and fields of these flowers.

Maybe they were weeds, but they were really pretty.
Hannah found lots of interesting rocks under foot.

As we were walking, I was contemplating how nice it was to be outside, away from the city hub-bub . . . and enjoying the quiet-ness of it all. Not too soon after I had these thoughts, both girls commented how loud it was with all the birds squawking!

Maybe we’ve been too close to the city for too long! But, we did see a lot of fun birds.

As we made our way out of the fields and into a wooded area, we started looking for weasel setts and little paw prints. We didn’t see any prints but we saw lots of possible homes for Mr. Weasel.

Hannah liked this one the best as it was something she could probably fit into.

When we reached the end of the wooded area, there was no doubt where to go – over the stile. There was a cute little bench set right there for that very purpose.

We continued on the path that took us down to the Thames River. As we got closer, the wind definitely picked up and we got a little more chilled. We were hoping to have a little picnic close by but we’ll have to save that for a warmer day.
We walked right by the Lock and were so lucky that a boat was waiting for the lock to fill so it could come through. So, we stood there and watched the Lock Keeper (complete with an eye patch for Cami to yell to me that he was a pirate) open the lock and let them in.

When the lock was closed, we continued upriver where we saw a couple more boats out for a jaunt.

The rower probably wouldn’t call it a ‘jaunt’ for how hard he was working.

But, this guy looked about ready to drop anchor and fish.
Just around the bend, we saw what is called Temple Island.

I think it looks like a fun little place to explore – if you could get there without a boat.
But, then we found a really fun place that would be fun to explore – it looks just like Toad Hall should look like.

Doesn’t it look grand and quite complete with the swan in front?
The swans actually came up on shore and begged bread from the girls. They were more than thrilled to comply.

By this time, we were cold and hungry (having not been able to have our picnic) so we finished our circle and headed back to the car.
When we picked up the older two kids, the girls didn’t hesitate to tell them all the fun we had on our ‘adventure.’ That’s when you know it was a success! I had quite enjoyed myself as well.
