We have reached a milestone on our website/blog! It’s been great being able to record what goes on in our lives to keep in touch with our family and friends. Not that our lives are always exciting but we have found ourselves going through our days and when something happens we instantly think “I have to write about this on the website.” This has been a great place to record our own family journal. Keeping that in mind . . .
I took the kids to the park this morning and while they played I thought I heard far away drum beats. The pied piper? I started having flash backs of marching band competitions where the drum beats coming from all directions would make your pulse quicken and would haunt you for days afterwards. Then Emma started hearing my phantom drum beats as well . . . so we set off to the other end of the park to find the source. I thought for sure it would be from the high school a couple miles away but no, the high school marching band was practicing on a baseball (yes, you read that right – baseball, not football field) field across the street from the park. So, we set up camp and watched for awhile. It definitely brought back memories of summer marching band practices in the scorching heat. Then we noticed all the suitcases lining one end of the field – ah . . band camp! So, after a hot morning practice, they were off to band camp for the week. Even though these are great memories, I am so glad not to have to endure them anymore. Six years (high school and 2 years at BYU) were enough for me. But, just the thought of those drum beats just makes my adrenaline start pumping and feeling like I’m in that mode again. Of course I had to be sure to point out the French horns hiding behind the tubas to the kids! Then because Emma started her flute lessons today we pointed out all those who were playing flutes and piccolos.

On the walk home we stopped to observe these ducks sitting at the top of a waterfall, letting the water rush over their feet. It did look rather relaxing . . .

I remember those days, how I used to be jealous that you got to go to band camp and get away from the house 🙂 I still love to watch and listen to a high school marching band practice and perform…….you know how hard they worked to be doing what they are doing……….I just realized how long ago that was, WOW!!!
Becca, I had forgotten you played French Horn! I did too! Not as extensively…but I did love it. Congrats on your 100th post!
Those drumbeats still haunt me too. Your pulse quickens, you stand more erect, you’re ready to go at a moments notice. Wow, it’s been a long time.
Congrats on your 100th post!! 🙂
That is great that Emma is starting flute! Lindsey starts piano on Thursday, she would like to learn to play the harp too. So we said learn to play the piano well first, and then we’ll figure out this harp thing! 🙂
Yeah for the 100th post! What a fun time at the park! I’ll bet it was so fun to hear the band practicing. I loved to hear you guys play at BYU. The games just wouldn’t be the same without the band! In fact I was in the MTC in the fall and could hear the band practicing and it made me think about and miss those fun times. Isn’t that so neat when something stirs you like that? When I hear bagpipes that’s how I feel. I don’t know if it’s the Scottish in me, the sound of the instrument, or what….Everyone’s got to have something that stirs them I think! 🙂
congrats on your 100th post becca!!! aren’t blogs great! how did we ever get along without them!? such an easy and fun way to keep a record/ stay in touch with friends and family!
why didn’t i know you were a band geek? i was an orchestra nerd and the band geeks were my closest friends! there is nothing that gets the blood pumping more than a drumline. fyi…the movie drumline was a lame plot but so worth rewinding several times to hear the drumline. =)
